The modern mandolin is of Italian origin having originated from the lute.  They have a wide variety of styles - A style, F-Style (scroll curve) and deep Italian style.  They all have 4 sets of double strings (eight total) giving the mandolin a unique "zing" when playing chords.  The mandolin is popular in bluegrass, country, and American roots music styles as well Celtic music.
